Greetings, TeamLCPS!
As you know, each October we celebrate #Kindness Month here at Louisa County Public Schools. This is always a very inspirational time for our school division and we have made so many incredible memories over the years. I always enjoy flipping the calendar over to October because I know good times are ahead! Today, I want to provide you with details for this year's plans for #Kindness Month, which I know will be another fantastic and memorable initiative!
Over the past couple of days, it has become very clear that there is a significant need right here in our Commonwealth that needs our support. As many of you know, the damage caused by Hurricane Helene has been significant all across the East Coast. Closer to home, the flooding and damage caused in southwest Virginia is severe. Many communities -- each filled with students, teachers, and families -- face a lengthy recovery process.
When the 2011 Mineral Earthquake struck our school division, I can still vividly remember how impactful it was that dozens of school divisions and communities -- from all across the state and the country -- stepped up to help us out. They offered us a helping hand when we needed it most, and that display of kindness is something I will never forget and always cherish.
So, we have decided as a TEAM to direct a large portion of our #Kindness movement towards our friends at Grayson County Public Schools in southwest Virginia. This school division, like ours, features six schools (four elementary, one middle, one high). As you will see in the photos below, the storm hit them especially hard over the past several days and they face lengthy closures at all of their schools.
Accordingly, today, we are launching a movement called "#Kindness For The Commonwealth." As part of this initiative, each of our six schools will be adopting a school in Grayson County to support. Over the next month, we will be hosting coin drives at each school, as well as collecting donations in an effort to support our friends in Grayson County.
HERE IS HOW YOU CAN CONTRIBUTE:
-
Please consider donating spare change to the coin drive taking place at your child’s school. Coin drives will take place from October 7 to October 18.
-
Please consider donating spare change to coin drives that are conducted during LCPS Athletics events throughout the month.
-
Please consider donating supplies to the supply drives at your child’s school. The supply drives will take place from October 21 to October 31. Items being suggested include:
-
Bottled Water & Sports Drinks
-
Canned and/or Non-Perishable Food
-
Basic School Supplies (Pencils, Backpacks, etc.)
-
Cleaning Supplies and Batteries
-
First Aid Kits
Earlier this week, we were able to speak with the Superintendent of Grayson County Public Schools, Kelly Wilmore. He is extremely grateful for our community’s support and he asked that we pass along his sincere appreciation to each of you.
Over the next few days, be on the lookout for more specific details from your child’s principal. We have a lot planned and look forward to getting the momentum rolling!
Thank you for your enthusiasm each year as we spread #Kindness! We are TeamLCPS!
