Fountas and Pinnell Leveling System
At Jouett Elementary, we use the Fountas and Pinnell Leveling system to determine each child’s reading level. It is very important for each child to be instructed at their individual level. Leveled books allow students to read and comprehend various types of texts, exposing them to information and vocabulary they can understand. This allows them to gain background knowledge that will help them move onto higher level texts. It also promotes reading success for all students!
Every four and a half weeks, we send home a Reading Progress Report with each of our students. Listed on the progress report you will find your child’s instructional reading level. In order for your child to continue to make progress in reading, they need to be reading books at their independent level. A child’s independent reading level is one level below their instructional level. A description of each of the Fountas and Pinnell levels is included on this page. You will also find a suggested reading list for each level. It is our hope that you will use this online resource to support your child’s reading development at home.
