LEARNING GOALS - OUR S.O.L.s

(Virginia Standards of Learning)

We use the Virginia Department of Education Standards of Learning as a basis for all classroom instruction. The Standards are referred to as SOLs.

Our school year is divided into four 9 week periods. Many SOLs are taught and tested during the same 9 weeks they are introduced to the students.

Some standards in math, reading, and writing are not officially tested or given a final evaluation until later in the school year. Why? Young children need time to practice skills and ideas in the critical areas of math, reading, and writing. Progress in these areas is monitored throughout the year and instruction is planned to meet individual student needs.

Building a strong foundation in these areas takes time!

 How to read the chart:

The first grade SOLs are listed by subject area within the 9 week period they are introduced and taught. SOLS introduced, taught, and tested during a 9 week period are underlined and in bold print.
